Common Types of Prosecution
As a result of strict mandatory sentencing guidelines, individuals facing federal drug charges are in danger of being incarcerated for lenghthy sentences traditionally given violent criminals. Recently, New York State has recognized the value of treatment programs as an alternative to incarceration but generally these programs are reserved for the young, for first offenders and for those charged with possessing relatively small quantities of illegal narcotics.
There is a growing sense among legal scholars, judges and politicians that the so-called "war on drugs" is not working and that narcotics and particularly marijuana should be legalized. The following are links to organizations working toward the legalization of narcotics:
